1. (a) No suger is produced locally, except a small quantity

of coarse sugar cane.

(b) Rice and sweet potatoes.

(c) None.

2. (a) Roughly estimated not to exceed 3,000 acres.

(b) Rice and sweet potatoes are under cultivation to the

extent of about 50,500 acres, of which about 75% is rice.

3. The normal yield of rice is about 3 piculs per mow (1.09

tons per acre per crop).

4. None of these materials could be available for distilling

purposes. The rice produced in the Territories is not even sufficient for the neede of the Colony.

5. A ton of rice could be available at the point of cultivation

at about $134.00 per ton (88.00 per picul). A ton of sweet potatoes at about $20.00 ($1.20 per picul).

6. Human transportation (see para. 7, unskilled labour).

The expenses for transporting a ton of rice from New Terri- tories to Hongkong harbour would be approximately $1.40. Owing to the short distance between the producing place and the harbour the transportation affects only slightly the original price.

unskilled labour 80.50 to $1.00 a day.

8. None. No coal has been found so far in the New Territories.

There is no water available for industrial purposes. CoA]

is imported at the price of $20.00 per ton.
